then came
the black dress
surrey--
the horses' feet
on the street
elongated.
there were no
passengers since
it was snowing;
driver are
you going,
are you goin'?
the white dress
bench is drenched
in last year
some bombing
quite like
this one.
to be this month
could be alright
like pancake ice,
like sy
rup.
the pretty lady
steps out
of the carriage
it's a marriage
to one leg, no
eyes. "commander
please tell mama
I said hi".
the young boys sound like old men and
they sing the gospel hymns
we would chant when we were children before the war.
about saints
and marching in,
but in december
it's hard to remember
our Father
who art in
heaven-
amen
