The Good Ol' Days

I wonder what happened to those days,
filled with
RainbowSmiles&ShiningLaughter
[girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes…]
..?

Drinking was lemonade
[without the vodka]

Sex was the difference between a boy and a girl
[not every weekend]

Drugs came from the chemist and went straight to the highest cupboard
[and they used to be good for my health]

Cutting was for vegetables
[not stress relief]

Heroes were Batman and sports stars
[Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain, Nikki Sixx]

Love was everything your parents gave you
[And it couldn’t be bought or sold for all the world]

Dreams became reality,
Hope sprang eternal,
Wishes were granted,
&
Impossible was nothing.

The world was whatever shape you liked it best, as it glittered with butterflies and possibility, and spun through the clouds and the stars, and could be fully explained with a fairytale ending.

But
Things change.
And now the earth simply rotates on its axis, ignoring the people who live, love, work and suffer, all the while seeking to extricate themselves from childish wonder.

People learn.
You learn to hurt and hate,
To swallow pills without question
And gulp down smoke and spirits.
Love becomes an enemy
[unless it first becomes sexual.]

Dreams wash away with first light,
Hope is for the foolish,
Wishes fall on deaf ears
&
Impossible is the everyday.
