Empty Pots and Broken Windows

in the broken-down greenhouse

one bulb rolled off the battered bench

slid inside an old terracotta pot

and waited

all the other bulbs

beg to a warmer sky

and sun

under rich loam they lie

one bulb still waits

for spring

inside a darkened room

I cannot but find this poem amusing. I can see the renegate bulb as one with a plan =) I wouldn't worry about it as it has enough stamina to roll somewhere else - only, it has to realize that. I kinda see the other bulbs more at the mercy of outside forces - they grow when they are'told'. I used to envy bulbs of this kind but now I prefer the one waiting for enlightenment, which will not come from the outside but from the inside. Cheers to the outcast =)

thanks genies... it does have a hint of humour behind the smallness of sorrow too... it's life and love, I suppose

      thanks for the great comment

    Love it!

I know, you'll smile at my 'green-ness' but yes... so perfect! Not a syllable wasted!
The words reak of their subjects. I can feel the cool shade down in the 'old pot' and then such sunshine as I lay down with the bulbs, to soak the warm light up.(Which also reminds me of pleasures in skipping school, for some reason.) Reading your work is not only extremely enjoyable, it's also an education which I can feel.
    Much thanks Gilly X

This is beautiful in a quiet way. I like what Kathleen said...a soft stillness. Really I am liking these poems about random things lately. I enjoyed this very much. It brings images to mind you would normally not think of.

    Very interesting

    a great metaphor.

You just might wonder how many of these bulbs are strewn within our cultures.

    I liked this Gil.

we all wait for discovery and hope we are not overlooked or forgotten, I think that bulb had itself been battered on that bench, had to make its final retreat, making its only choice; survive to wait a little longer.

I loved this poem, Gill. Cant wait for spring and the chance to work in my garden and bring it back to life. Such a simple little poem but it reminds the reader that he/she is a bit like the bulb, waiting for warmer days, bright sunshine and the chance to bloom. Lovely, just lovely.

    Kind regards,
    Helen

They say patience is a virtue and to sit in darkness waiting patiently to bloom could only produce beauty. This poem is sad yet full of grace and beauty...much like you at times. Your poetry moves me.

OMFG... I love you Gilly. Your poetry is stunning. This kinda reminds me of William Carlos Williams' "the red wheel barrow" and the contest Al's hosting... its all in things... and its all beautiful...

The title is oh, so effective, all those empty souls baring their souls to the faux of solariums in the need for kiss-me-bliss -me and there, there in the depths is the depth of the soul that says give me a reason to grow towards the light, love it, despite no mention of Angeline, she is a bulb I feel who would wait within the teracotta pot or simply not give a jot! The bulb has to be an Essex girl or a Northern lass, neither need to conform but wait for a reason to sing the season of spring felt all year round. Patience is profound.Especially liked the way the title stepped into the poetry and didn't stop stepping 'til the last word...

Just wanted to come back and tell you ..

    this touched me deeply
    there is sadness here,
    a little bit of grief
    mixed with surrender...

but there is no pity party
    it is beautifully expressed
    sorrow.

    i bookmarked it..

awww. You know a poem is good when you start feeling sorry for a plant bulb.
I like the soft stillness in this, the wait, anticipation of what may never come...
    very nicely done, hon.

That's a patient bulb, if you ask me. I would be willing to bet it is the most beautiful flower in the greenhouse, too. Knowing that to wait in the darkness behind the broken glass is worth it?

Yep, that'll be a one of a kind bloom.

i guess my first reading is about how some get a good start and blossom and how some have to struggle to survive but still have the potential to blossom - its not about how you start its where you end
    i like it muchly
