What a contrast delivered in the last line - this tough man cannot show, perhaps not even feel love, but when he receives it, everything is changed. The poem reminds me of the old image of the hardened prisoner and his softened face as he regards a fluffy kitten.

I really like this. Some need to be loved until they can love themselves. I work in a rehab and I often say "kill 'em with kindness" when we get someone who has been treated in a bestial way for so long they lose touch with their humanity. They need love in spite of how much they fight against it. We are all God's children. Thankyou for this great entry.
