Of pain and pleasure

Sudden slip; tendons tear
pain, sharp - without pleasure.

exploration without boundaries,
daunting mountains, treacherous valleys.

You cannot; but I will, with pleasure.

Author notes

The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say you cannot do.

Volcaniclastic - 22 words.

For those of you who don't get it: in the summer of 2006, I tore most of the tendons in both my knees apart sliding down a mountain side (I hate talus). Because of this, it's given me tendonitis, extreme enough that it's likely it will never heal. As a geologist (almost) in the field, that means I can't do any long term hiking anymore, and steep hills just KILL me. I frequently get told that I'm in the wrong field to have such injuries and continue working, and I frequently ignore such misgivings. The field is my life. Pain or no pain. They make pills for that. Thus, in my little corner of the world, the greatest pleasure in my life is doing what I've been told I can't.

I will persevere, in pain, or not.

sort of the same thing happened with me, so i know what this poem meant before your description...my injury wasn't nearly as bad as yours but seeing that i was a little kid lost in the woods, i was more scared than anything...i fell in a rabbit hole (not to be confused with Alice's trip, though that would be nice) and i twisted my knee...needless to say, i love hiking in the mountains (i lived in the foothills of the appalachians, in GA) and i used to dance with thorny briar patches all the time...its all great fun! i just know to watch my step from now on...

Love the smart voice in that back of this. Prevailing and strong in the winds.
