Like the roar of the crashing waves,
I learned to survive,
like the breathe that stills one moment from the next,
I learned to be strong.
Each day my skin grew thicker,
the cage around my heart stronger,
my emotions kept them bottled,
just an effort to survive.
But I wasn't surviving,
I was living,
if that at all.
I was strong from the tears I shed,
the moments laid to rest,
and the desperation to pull through another day.
Dying would be to easy,
running wouldn't be enough,
so I learned to fight.
Fought myself,
fought love,
the impossible,
life,
and learning.
And then it hit me,
no remorse or self pity,
I was thankful and gracious,
for each bountiful gift I have.
My love,
my life,
and to those I love,
my gift to you.
