Since we parted,
I’ve tried to ring you...every night.
But your phone just
rings...rings...rings...
until tiring,
it unceremoniously clicks off
and I’m left with only...
the ‘engaged’ tone.
‘Engaged’...
that’ a joke!
“cos we aren’t engaged any more
are we?
The ring I gave you...
(no, not the one on the phone),
is back in its little hinged box
on the table at your side of the bed.
‘Your side of the bed’...
I sleep there now...every night,
for, somehow, you are still there
as I ‘remember‘ myself to sleep,
after putting aside the scribble pad
on which I had doodled
whilst waiting, and listening to your phone
ring...ring...ring.

Although I don't know if this was supposed to be funny, I cracked up when I read this. Maybe because I've been on both ends of the line and it's something I can relate to. Maybe because I found the humor in the situation.
It's a good read and I thank you for entering. -
Thank you for entering my competition.....I can feel the torment and regret in this piece and can see you waiting by the phone, doodling and waiting. Best wishes :)
