"It's a weeping cherry," I told her,
"with fountains of flowers and wood like carved canes."
She asked a poet's question-
"But why?
Why would a cherry tree weep?"
The answer came to me in the afternoon,
watching winds strip leaves from small branches.
Such weeping loveliness is at a price-
her many flowers will never bear fruit.
The cherry tree weeps because
she is barren.
Author notes
To create the splendid weeping cherry tree, two types of trees are spliced. The cherry blossoms pour out and down like a weeping willow. You can stand in a tent of pink. Sadly, the fruit never comes, only the flowers for a few days in the spring. They are extraordinarily beautiful, but the cost is fruitlessness.
