Calling him back

carefully, she studied
the compass rose
and sent missives
tied to seagulls’ wings
in all the directions
he might have gone

and she waited
by the long pier
near the longer shore
beneath measureless sky
feathering her nest
with expectation

but in all her planning
and hoped-for conclusions
she never imagined
he might not wish
to be found

You are so good at creating bountiful and believable imagery... This was a pleasure to read! I had just read of a "compass rose" and tucked it in the back of my mind, you have used this image beautifully!!!

You create such vivid imagery whenever I read your poems. I can completely imagine the scenery that you describe and the emotions you are portraying.

    'but in all her planning
    and hoped-for conclusions
    she never imagined
    he might not wish
    to be found'

That was a perfect way to end it. Great write.

Fantastic write...One can feel the longing and the expectations. Also strangely I feel an ocean breeze going through my hair...the words come to life.
The tone and flow are just fantastic.

    Keep up the good work,
    G

  • wow, well deserved trophy! this is a very unique and eloquent write. It flows so well, and tho I am not often very fond of non rhyme, or free write as they call it I guess, I was completly raptured by this lovely write. It is very beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing it. It is a delightful read

Interesting "compass rose." Enjoyed use of "missive." Seagulls fit the setting. Love the second stanza; long, longer, measureless; and "feathering her nest with expectation." Usually unpleasant, but nonetheless relevant concluding stanza. One's hopes and another's wishes do not of necessity agree.

This is gorgeous. I love the fact that the photograph is not added with your words but I can still see it. There are times in life when we wish hardest for those we love to return and they wish even harder that they never have to. That is sad but it is one of life's realities. An excellent take on the picture prompt. A stunning work! Thank you for this entry in my contest and I wish you the very best.

Wow! Awesome work! I love the beautiful images and words conjured up in this poem ... a picture painted with your words. One waiting anxiously for love to arrive, but forgetting that love is a two-sided proposition ... and expectations sometimes are one-sided ...

    "but in all her planning
    and hoped-for conclusions
    she never imagined
    he might not wish
    to be found"

    Best wishes in the competition!♥

Well it's not hard to find me! I'm easy like your poem, like N'awlin's streets like women at Hunts Point... Just easy to find. Hell, if you had a bottle of wine, I'll find you! One.
