I couldn't even hold you in my arms
before you floated out of my life.
I saw your black hair and green eyes
struggling against my sister, my midwife,
and I knew then true joy.
I'd loved you before I knew you were alive.
You were always alive in my dreams.
I saw your smile each night in my sleep,
and I pictured the life that you would have
as I watched you grow to a man.
I don't know what called you out of this world
before you had truly begun to see,
but I know that my heart can never be whole
after seeing you give your final breath
the day I bore you unto this place.
I named you for my dearest friend
who'd died before his time.
So when I watched my first and only child
perish before I could touch his cheek,
I said goodbye for the second time
and scattered my heart to the sea.
