Narcissism's Shadows

Missing image

Sunset drones its melody of enigmas,

hands stained by identity's calluses

watch in questioning resignation

the ebbing of ambition's fancy.

Bricks laid within the marrow

formed of ardor's mortar,

decay and crumble

amid the fleeting splendor

of glory's imagined citadels.

Carnivores of clarity

beset the utopian pillow creations,

hole opens in heart

where contentment's clay

should have molded

as a vessel of joy.

On the soil where life's memories was sown

mind gazes inward

towards the hollowness

created by pursuits of gold

instead of love.

Darkness surrounds

with its encompassing shroud,

until all one sees

is the void created

by the consuming chase towards the mirror.

    Totally awesome write

What a fabulous poem, full of remarkable metaphor and a vocabulary one can just bite into and taste the flavors of this poem (almost not worth mentioning but I believe it should be 'were' instead of 'was' in the first line of the fourth stanza) regardless I really enjoyed this poem.

Thank you for entering and good luck in the contest
