Anna was proud of her mum and dad
She loved and respected them too
When both decided to tell her
When her 18th birthday was due
That she was their child by adoption
They had had her right from the start
They thought they had morally no option
Though it may break young Anna’s heart
Though they broke it to Anna quite gently
They realised the worse of their fears
When the moment they made the announcement
Anna just burst into tears
She broke into uncontrollable sobbing
There were no consolations to find
To the conflict and utter confusions
Of the thoughts that ran through Anna’s mind
Times heals all wounds say the wise men
Though Anna found it hard to believe
that parents found it easier to deceive
The feeling of utter rejection
Whenever she thought of her birth
How could her mother just give her away
Did she think that’s all she was worth
Then she thought were there any siblings
A sister or brother perhaps ?
Likewise together discarded
What else had been kept under under wraps ?
She badgered her loving “parents”
To disclose where she had been born
And spent hours searching through dusty records
Till she felt so tired and quite worn
She found out that her mother was only 15
At the time that Anna was born
She located her mother who lived in a flat
Knocked on the door and found
She treated her like a ghost from the past
And just didn’t want her around
On the way back to her parents
She thanked her lucky stars that she got such
Kind and considerate parents
To love and be loved by so much.

I can't imagine not knowing I was adopted. What a bomb on your 18th birthday. Beautiful story. Thanks so much for entering my contest and for honoring me with a show of your work.

I like it a lot! It tells a wonderful story. The love shown by the parents, the realization of Anna, the birth mother's reaction - it all comes together to make a great story-type poem.
I love happy endings. Thank you for sharing this with me.

Great poem, and so emotional! I think it's good that Anna learned the truth, but sometimes just finding things that are hidden doesn't mean that even deeper truths are lurking beneath the surface: it's good she recognized and appreciated the parents that loved her so much. I really enjoyed reading this; thank you for entering.

*frown* Wow.
Talk about heartbreaking. One of the saddest stories I ever read. Anna should be thankful that she had a pair of loving and caring parents who were always there for her. Adoption is a complicated, tough, confusing, sad, yet hopeful thing for many kids. Some look at it as being rejected by the birth parents. I look at it as an opportunity for the other parents to show some love for a child who needs it. Great story here.

oh my gooood!!!
i loved his poem so much!! i read it and felt like crying!! i know what it feels like to be born to a fifteen year old mother. i was the same but she kept me. trust me, it's easier to have been adopted(even if it hurts:-( -
Well done. The most important thing is that Anna had loving people to return to. It isn't what you don't have that's important, it's to appreciate what you do have.Thank you for a lovely read. Cheers, Bob.
