There’s suspense in the air at the One-Day Cricket.
England made 340 runs to beat.
With 319 and the seventh wicket,
the Black Caps are batting in Napier’s heat.
Fine English fielding cost us dear -
six Kiwi wickets fell apiece.
Jamie How had made his century clear
before, run-out, he left his crease.
It’s the final ball of the fiftieth over
with 339 on the Black Caps’ score.
The batsman flips it out through cover
and the match is tied - just one run more.
Henry Newbolt’s words I quote, quite free from shame:
“Play up! Play up! Play up and Play the Game!”

Author notes
A splendid bunch of Kiwi faces,
unlike the Rugby teams we field
where half the players from other places
strive to defend The Cup and Shield.
J.M.How made 136 before being run out on the penultimate ball. His successor managed to make a single run off the final ball, bringing the NZ total to 340 which tied with England's score.
We now await the outcome of the fifth OD match in the series on Saturday in Christchurch with NZ two matches to England's one and one match tied.
This is, surely, cricket at its best.

Dear Hugh,
I saw the final innings with Bob and it was very exciting to watch. It'll be a very interesting game today to watch, even though I don't watch cricket I like the one dayers when they get exciting.
A great poem my dear Friend.
Love Bea

Cricket? That's like baseball right? Except you have these really hard balls (not you, not that I'm saying you don't!) but I mean the game...why do they have a ball that seems to be harder than a pool ball? And in baseball the scores are like 7-6, Cricket has that high of a score? Egads, talk about bad pitching! Do they call it pitching, when the guy throws the ball to the batter...like here...
What is NZ's number one sport anyway?
Lyndon played cricket? Who'd of thunk such a thing, he doesn't look the sporting type...Who's on first...sorry, an old comedy baseball routine.

Well
I am more interested in the cricket as a former grade player. Who is How? Ron.
