The Facts of Life (Sonnet)

When cometh one with most perplexed a-view,
Consorting to conform to perfect will,
What worst of all conclusions may ensue,
While open eyes can meet with friendship still.

When lover’s mind doth plot with lover’s heart,
‘Tis little one can do to cure the plan,
Yet stretched sinews tear the two apart,
When others do not see the pain of man.

If one can hold no judgments in regard,
Then holding high a head doth earn respect,
If one can smile and play the jokers card,
Wherefore thou not be candid and direct.

If on thou hand at death, can count three friends,
In peace thou canst approach most certain ends.
