Practice What I Preach

As I pen, the minutes tick, society is slowly crumbling
Kids having kids, then grandma is expected, to raise them up,
Moms, paying for fake boobs, hand them more money
No wonder, like Mt. Edna, life's volcano, is about to erupt

I can say, that my children, were taught the value of a dollar
Morals and values, are still a must in our crazy house,
By no means, am I perfect, and neither are they
Karma has bit me in the ass, as quiet as a church mouse

My daughters, now twenty one, and twenty seven, both great mommies
Now they, are facing the fears, I've taught them all their life,
I've told them everything, about the mistakes that I have made
Drugs, sex, rock and roll, how it cut me, like a knife

And now, that they have their own, precious children
They are seeing through post teenager, pre adult, innocent eyes,
The perils of motherhood, right in their pretty faces
Learning the who's, what's, when's, where's, and why's

Believe me, I'm guilty, I've been there, partied, done that
Risked my life doing drugs, slept with the devil, snorted cocaine,
I have even worked in the medical field, half of my life
Seems, that didn't even get me to want to refrain

Even working in the emergency room, eyeing life's damage
I followed the party crowd, even now, my husband has his own band,
Learning lessons, is still on my daily agenda, but I know a bit more
I pray, that even if I fall, I want my family to stand

Just last week, we had an ice storm, hell had froze over
Tori, my six year old grandaughter, here five days, glued to me like a leech,
Now, I have an even newer, innocent set of eyes, watching my every move
Back at square one again, I must practice what I preach

Sounds like you've written about me if you add two fellas to the children's list. I have four adult/children (love that oxymoron) LOL I feel you all over with this work poet. Yup! If I could practice what I preached... I would surely be a Preacher. LOL

LOVED THIS! Rhyme, flow, content Superb! I wish you the best in the challenge.

    Much Love & Respect ♥

    Wonderful!

Truly amazing write! Full of knowledge and the unfortunate truth of society today. (I should know, I'm still growing up in it) But it is true that everyone needs to be a role model to those who fall victim to these activities.

Roni, You really have no idea how much alike we really are. The only thing I never did was drugs, except the wacky tobacky! You are also right in your first stanza, so well stated, that kids today, even with the best advice from parents, think we are all so stupid. I was blessed. Mine listened. But how many don't? I hope this poem fares well in this contest! You packed a whallop of a lot of knowledge into one poem!

What a lovely reminder that we should always strive to do the right thing, even when we backslide a bit. I don`t have any grandchildren as of yet, (I stress yet lol) but i so understand where you are coming from in this piece. You never disappoint

    honest

A very well-written honest poem that certainly teaches anyone reading it a thing or two. I wish you luck with everything you'll have to endure and hope that you will stand along with your family today and always

Here we go again - been there, done that, and want to try to stop others from making the same mistakes you made. Trouble is, they too have to learn from their mistakes, not from yours! Easy to read and understand, liked the flow and the message you share here with others. We can try to help all we want, but if it is not wanted, does not make a difference. Enjoyed this poem as I can relate to it too.
