Bibliophilia

Missing image

Books, books, books. Books all around my walls.
For these written relics my enthusiasm never palls

I’m turning, turning, turning. Turning all the pages.
Releasing all the words from their pristine paper cages.

Laughing, crying, sighing. Experiencing each strong feeling.
As I discover what each cover has been carefully concealing.

Seeing, scanning, reading. Absorbing what’s been written.
By the love of literature I am forever smitten.

Hardy, Herriot, Hemmingway. Heinlein and the rest.
There is never any doubt about which writer is the best.

Biography, Criminology, Science Fiction or Science Fact.
Each is equally absorbing. There is no need for tact.

Morning, noon or night. In fact any time of day
By the pleasure of a book I am happily borne away!

Author notes

The prompt was a competition for a piece about books.
The passion has been there as long as I can remember.

Yes I know bibliophilia is not, strictly speaking, a word but it should be!

    I love books too!

I just like being around books...the library, a bookstore, shelves of books at a second hand store. Love them! Oh...and I do like reading them too of course! ***Pam***

Wow I love this. Sitting in my study which is walled by oak book cases (from The National Physics library in London -presumably they went over to melamine or metal).
I love it in here and I just can't get enough books, even though I have way too many and they are all double deep.
All the ceilings in our cottage are only 6 feet tall -except in here where it goes from 10 feet down to 6 feet, so the book cases behind me are very tall too - and all have books on top as well...

I think this is my favourite poem of yours.

That's high praise Liz. Thank you very much It sounds like your library has character. Most of myshelves are self assembly flatpack stuff.
All the rooms 6 foot seems a trifle claustrophic. Hope the young uns don't put on a massive growth spurt.

I need an extra room for my books and everyone keeps trying to get me to "down size" them, yet I would say that is because they are tired of moving them for me...lol
Wonderful write on the love of books and how they make us feel, some beautifully placed lines throughout...
    Very nice, indeed!

"Down sizing" an ugly phrase for a difficult job. I am currently going through my collection book by book to decide which will go and which will stay. Including old sci-fi and lit mags thats over 30,000 to whittle down and abandon.
The problem is, every time I go out I see more books I want to adopt

Now would that be James Herriott I wonder? You do have a varied taste in reading:
"Releasing all the words from their pristine paper cages" is a wondeful line as that's what happens whenever we devour the words from the page.
Thanks so much for your entry and for your support in this contest.

Living so close to the Yorkshire Dales I found Herriott's descriptions of their people and scenery captivating and, though dated it still had a great resonance. His tales were humerous too which helped. Hemmingway was the hard one to read.

Bibliophile is a word so why not bibliophilia. I see you've got the addiction, the one certain others find hard to understand.

    The Memories

I used to have ALL day to read. I'd finish a book within two days. Now I have a humongous pile of them to get to. A Tree Grows In Brooklyn,a few by Erma Bombeck...the list goes on.

I'll see your humongous and raise you 2 gigantics. My collection has got out of hand but I am finding it hard to give away these treasures. Every so often I steel myself and drop off a couple of box-fulls at a local charity shop, and try to avoid buying replacements .
Thanks for all your visits today.

        Thank You

I know what you mean. I had shelves of books and when I moved in July had to make room for all of Hannah's books,LOL. My mom saved all of my childhood books and I've added on to the collection. My favorite books are from Barefoot Books at:www.barefootbooks.com.It's nice you give your's to a worthy cause. Now they are getting passed on for others to enjoy. I donated mine to the local library.
