...a single girl's lament!...

Dressed to my best capability,
in flannel pjs if you may.
A bottle of cola, a sappy movie,
Romancing Ben and Jerry all the way!!

Nothing special about today,
as far as other days go.
Yet my friends are all mushy and
apparently Tom had Renee at Hello.

I click off 'Jerry' with a groan,
Turn on the radio with hope anew.
But alas love is everywhere!
Usher is on crooning 'boo'!

Why oh why must you taunt,
a single girl who's usually happy?
with an overdose of lovey doveyness,
and make me feel so very crappy!

Where are my usual action flicks?
my funky songs, my normal friends?
I groan, I curse, stare at my watch,
I wait for this wretched day to end!

*Ring Ring* the telephone sings,
with an annoyed voice I say 'Hello?'
"Happy Valentine's Day! sorry I'm late"
a deep, masculine voice I well know.

Now don't you people dare smirk or
smile and look at me that way!!
Everyone knows that no matter what,
at the end we all love this silly day!

Smart girl.I didn't except such a happy fairy tale ending.because the beginning sounded so much like you were unhappy with the day.
but well you kept me curious.and the story kept on twisting.
    I'm so relieved now.

This was very clever and a good effort. I can see a lot of potential in your lyrical verse, and despite the fact that some of your rhymes were a little forced (happy and crappy for example) some of them were extremely natural (the line about Tom and Renee, for example). I would suggest that you focus less on finding words to rhyme and more on your syllabic rhythm. The Tom and Renee stanza is pretty close to perfect, but in other stanzas your tendency to find the "right word" makes the rhythm run off with you. Regardless, I had a lot of fun reading this little piece and (although I don't necessarily agree that we ALL love Valentine's Day) it did make me feel a little better about the cardboard hearts hanging from every conceivable structure everywhere I go. Thanks for posting this, and keep up with your lyric verse...like I said I think there are big things in the future for you if this poem is any indicator.

    All the best,
    -Ale

    Great Poem

This is an awesome poem (but no I don't love this day). You have a lot of talent and I was amused and smiling from beginning to end. I love romance but I just haven't had much luck on this particular holiday. One day, eh? Anyhow, I hope you have a very happy Valentine's Day and keep on writing. You're a very talented young woman! Be blessed and a blessing! And God bless!
