small voice

My soft voice, you say;
when a roar is expected, too gentle.
I stand in a veiled tense of tenderness
and your eyes judge.

I do not wither 'neath your gaze, did you notice
my eyes at yours; and in drizzling rains,
I still walk empty streets searching
damp city air for my freedom.

And when lightning flashed
those hot summer nights, and heavy air
teased our bare skin; I did not flinch,
but taught you to count to thunder.

When howling hurricanes come to strike down
walls holding the sea, and skies turn in seeming anger
staring down gasping life; when evil crosses
the doorway, in the pitch of darkness

I stand there too,

commanding storms with my whispers,
promising never to leave your side;
standing with my small voice
breath and faith near your ear,
and my ever quiet whispers
close to your heart.

Absolutely beautiful The poem can be read on several levels depending on the readers approach of the moment. I love the concept that loud is not the same as strong. Wonderful write.

Obviously I am not the only one to say, "Wow". This is a wonderufl poem, very moving and so full of the very faith and commitment that we, as human beings seem to be forever searching for. It's a treat to read a well written, wondrfully positive moment in the scheme of love and loving, especially since there are so many verses of heartbreak and tortured feelings out there.

Beautiful write s and best wishes always... ~Genie~

      Thank you, Genie...
this poem came from a discussion i had with a friend about loud and soft voices... i think it is what is said that makes the voice strong... anyway...thank you so very much for your kind, generous...most meaningful comments, and I agree...this is something we all seem to seek... PK

Here you show that your voice may sound soft, and it's is soft just like soft is your heart, to those you care about. Yet, for what I have read on your page, poems about politics and society issues, I do know that your voice can sound very hard too.
I believe you have both sides and use them very wisely; soft when you want, hard when you must be.
Excellent poem and deserved of all the prizes!

A rock that holds steady in the storm, moving close to protect and keep safe. I loved the images, the language used, your voice-not quite so small. What a dear and precious poem this is and rightly adorned with so many gold trophies.

When read aloud, your line breaks and punctuation add so much emotion and 'whispers' where needed. Absolutely exquisite writing.

    Excellent. ~Pamela

Oh, my. This is so affecting. To hear the quiet voice and to feel it's strength, resilience and inspiration is just swooning to think about. I love the counting to thunder as the perfect picture of peace and composure. I also loved the "I stand there too," following the string of devastations. That phrase, set off too itself, just multiplies the effect of the statement it makes. Love the understatement of the title. Lots of amazing stuff with language and imagery, but such beauty and such stalwart quiet--I am in awe.

I finally seem to have gotten your style of writing This yet again was very well written, perhaps not as 'thoughtful' as the others you wrote but filling that void with the emotions in it.Very well done and deserving of the gold

    Excellent Write

Amazing, dynamic, piece of work. You voice just can't be small when it protects what you love. Even spoken softly it has the power to heal the heart of a child...from fears...novy

No small voice, indeed!! This is exquisite poetry if I've ever seen it. The semi-colons caught me off guard at times, but all in all this is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. No other words can describe the feeling and sensation I experience after reading this piece.

This totally rocks. I adore this one!!! I like how you so gently but passionately disprove the false assessment at the beginning. The following stanzas answer in a stalwart meekness that reveals such beauty and resiliance of character. This one was vivid and lovely. To me, tenderness is a sign of strength, self-assurance and a fervent heart, and is all the opposite of weakness. Beautifully spoken.
