Darkened Road

This is a darkened road,
A road of twisting lies,
In payment for a choice I made
Oh so many years now past.
Black thorns twine about my feet;
No sun runs through my hair.
I am every bit alone,
My hope long left behind.
This dark road be my destiny,
The shadows be my fate.
The dark road twines throughout the wood
Of fury and thwarted dreams,
Of fire and broken confidence,
Of hatred and betrayal.
The shadows of those who lost their way
Flit amidst dead trees,
Not together but divided,
Split by crimes long past.
Sinners prone forever to wander
Into the grave and past again,
Seeing our children,
Our parents together,
Laughing and talking once more.
We’ll smile one last time
As we walk this darkened road.

Author notes

I have never been very good at writing poetry, but I think this is one of my better attempts.

Is this at all passable?
