Nine Degree Day

Suppose ET really did want to ‘phone home’?  Suppose he wanted to, not because things were so bad, but because a flawed family filled with love reminded him of something, somewhere…

When the wind is brutal on a frigid day, there is a point to the fact that you can still feel your fingers and the warmth of the sun if you find a sheltered corner.

Perhaps a stranger’s smile in a crowded aisle during your worst day genuinely has no malice.  Perhaps, it is just that; a smile.

Never forget or lose the image of children fighting so violently and then playing together happily just moments later.

What if, that hateful, disgusting, miserable person at work really was put in your path for a reason?

Before a raging fireplace a man reflects on war, politics, and a schoolmate who recently passed.  His dog, with no memory of yesterday and no plans for tomorrow lays its thoughtless head on his leg.

When a toddler cocks his tiny head and grins at you, and you poke your fingers in his little ribs to make him laugh, always remember you used to have ribs just like that.

After a hard day of work, when you lie down, do you feel those little aches?  Pain comes in different sizes and if it fits, it can be comforting.

It’s plausible that all the good ideas you’ve ever had, but never acted on, still made you a better person.

The homecoming queen with crow’s feet at the corner of her eyes, the king with the receding hairline, still see themselves in the mirror of senior year.  Time cannot take their crowns away.

When your night is totally black, do you still believe, like a child, that you can reach out and touch a star?  …I do.

Just a museum of eleven random mind paintings, hung within my halls on a nine degree day.

Please tell me what you think

    Great reminders!

What a great way to view the world. We all could use remembering to view the world in a simpler way. I also took from this that we as humans, sometimes, because of our backgrounds and experiences, may assume things to be different than they really are. Our expectations come from past experiences, and those can be so deeply ingrained. Correct me if I am wrong, but that is just what I take most from this wonderful write. I love this! Blessings, Patty

A wonderful thought. On a good day sometimes it is just fun to smile at someone, try to share a little of your happiness. And its the best feeling to have a smile returned by a stranger, not to be so focused on negatives all the time or worry about the true motives behind some kind word or gesture. Children truly seem to understand this much better than we do. As we grow older we learn suspicion and deceit and I think it does take something away from us, some beautiful innocence. Thank you for reminding me to appreciate these things every day, this is a lovely piece of prose and I thank you for sharing it!

What a shame that this isnt in a contest! It's such a beautiful message of hope. I am glad I ran into it because I have had trouble looking on the bright side of things lately, and there really always is a silver lining. I especially love the part about a misrable disgusting person being put in your path for a reason.
That is such a good point.

And wow, I envy that dog with no memories of yesterday and the toddler who still feels the magic that people are born with. I want to harness some of that magic again! And I know it can be done, its only a matter of wanting it enough to make it so.

I really loved this. If I had a wall of poetry, this would surely be on it!

This is absolutely brilliant, the most beautiful message for anyone in a state of boredom, apathy, ennui, depression, mid-winter blues.....your words make an imprint, now and later. Bravo.

A notable offering with a poem that is not a poem yet is a poem. Technically I guess that this is a series of prose paragraphs shaped into a poetic form, yet it is more than that, it gives pause for reverie and allows us to be touched and reminded. Thank you for sharing this poetic contribution.

Oh. This is a really cool little poem that you have going on here. I liked this one. I like how each one has thought that alludes to something or other. I like when things aren't spelt out for me. It gives me room to think, you know? You had some pretty good thoughts in this one. I think my favorite one was the one about ET. That was a really nice thought and I had never concerned that before when I watched the movie. I thought you did a pretty good job expressing yourself here.

great words of wisdom here, keep that mind painting these thoughts and keep putting them online for the rest of us to read and enjoy! I sometimes think that those dogs have more thoughts running through their heads than they let on, they're just better at dealing with them than we are!
