Some gave All

Missing image
Upon my shoulders
I bear the blame
for the man
we buried
and spoke his name.

I watched his wife
console their son
they spoke of freedom
and battles won.

She held the flag
to her chest,
 gently
laid him down to rest.

I heard the shots
fired loud
watched the jumps
among the crowd.

Fought my tears
when taps was played
clenched my teeth
as they filled in the grave.

My friend fought with valor
died to be free,
blood stained for our country,
is this victory?

He was a Soldier,
Proud to serve,
gave his all,
laid down in Earth.

Heaven will greet him,
arms open wide
he died for another
they call it pride.

One of our first friends here in Washington was killed recently in Iraq. Matthew Pionk was a funny great guy, who always managed to make us laugh. He served with Javier in 1/24. He will be sorely missed, he left behind 3 children 8, 6 and 3, and a beautiful wife. He had earned a Bronze star from his first tour in Iraq for helping an injured friend during combat, and died when terrorists set off an IED in a house, five other Soldiers were killed with him. He was AN AMERICAN SOLDIER.

Please Pray for the Troops still serving overseas.

    God Bless Them All...

This is such a sad truth of our violent world. Old men start wars & young men fight & die in them. We never seem to learn, it seems...but how else do we strike back at those who would terrorize & paralyze our world with fear??? I'm so sorry for your loss, for the acute loss his family must feel. He earned his wings long ago...& now he soars, free, wild, without pain. I believe we'll see our loved ones again, one fine day. Until then, he watches over the fragile hearts who loved him so. This tribute was so beautifully done, Dear Heart. Bless you for always speaking up. Wanda

Well spoken and straight from the heart! As long as people care the loss is never for nothing. It has done great good. I wish all soldiers could be home where they belong with their families. Great write my friend!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Friends become such a part of our lives, sometimes closer than family. My daughter served in the Gulf right after 9/11 so she was stateside by the time the Irag invasion took place. She is out of the service now and I thank God everyday that she doesnt get called back.
My prayers are always said for the troops that are still fighting and for their families.
A beautiful tribute you have written to honor your friend.

Cat... this is very sad. I am sorry for your loss. You articulate the emotionos you feel so well. This is a tribute to your friend Matthew and all othe other AMERICAN SOILDERS, who are fighting the same fight.

This poem is beautiful and heartfelt. I ache for his wife and children and for his friends, family and fellow Hero/Soldiers.
