Here stands this child, eyes open so wide her soul
Is exposed for all to view; heart beating with love
Yet others fear her, not knowing what they don’t
Understand.
Eyes filled with sadness and stories not told
She goes to school there are the fleeting stares
as she passes; behind her back whispers and glares
Her moods swing and bound about as she fights
to stay in control.
Have the guardians in her life lied?
We’ve told her she is beautiful, smart,
remarkable, amazing yet,
The children say she wears ugliness
like a dress…
We have failed her by not teaching the others
to look beyond the change of moods, the jerking
of her head, tapping of hands and swinging arms
Let them come up to her and look deep inside
See the true beauty that radiates from within
Inquire about the sadness of those liquid eyes
Then maybe they too can learn; learn tolerance
from this one child, the one with life-weary eyes
Who has seen and lived too much pain

Beautiful
Children can be cruel when someone is different. This is such a sad poem. I always tried to teach my children that they should get to know the one's who are blessed with difference as they can be the most interesting individuals they will ever meet.

What a sad and touching write... Yet so beautiful in its way of telling a story of a child that is not accepted for who she is because everyone just looks at her and sees she is "different"... I'm glad the picture inspired you to write such an excellent poem full of wisdom and truth.
I love the last stanza, it calls for everyone to open their eyes and see the true beauty in those eyes of sadness... A statement that can be applied to so many people...
Thanks for entering this into my contest!
Keep on writing!

This is my biggest worry in life....My daughter was born with a significant birth defect and kids are already asking whats wrong with her and starring at her funny and she is only 2. Hopefully many surgerys will correct this but it will take most of her growing years to fix so the stigma will remain. She IS beautiful and full of life and would make anyone a wonderful friend if only they will give her the chance. You poem here really touched me on a personal level....We need to teach acceptence in our children.. Well done here and best of luck in the contest

children are always cruel to one another. been that way throughout time. its sad, but so true. being different in anyway, is seen as something bad. too bad children or even adults don't try to even find the beauty thats inside of a person. normally that can't see past out they see on the outside. the saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" I like this poem that you wrote a lot. it holds an important message that is often overlooked except by the people who have been through such an experience. or have been in a lot pain.
great job and good luck in the contest
