Death's Embraces

A compendious vocabulary
mixed with scintillating wit
marks a true illuminary ...
elevated from the pit
of common mediocrity
in evidence the world wide.
That should mean security
wherever you reside ...
But in many war torn places
these sterling qualities
lead to death's embraces
due to sad realities.
These peoples' deaths are surging
from prejudice and racial purging.

Author notes

Across the world, wherever genocide and racial purging hold sway, it's always the aim to kill off the most intelligent of the people they are trying to destroy. Even if they don't get them all, the best will be gone and they will decline as a people anyway. That's the theory. Too bad we haven't thought about that when it comes to our ceaseless wars, where our best go down into the dust as well.

  • this is beautiful and so true...
i'm studying Chinese, and when i learned about the Cultural Revolution it made me a little sick to my stomach. that was the first thing that came to mind.

and you've done a gorgeous job with the altered sonnet form! way to use it to your advantage and let your grasp of the language show through.

Justice Robert Jackson coined a phrase about language to effect that the simple saxon[word] that doth pierce like an arrow... your words here go unerring to a heart, and Iraq is yet anther example there US tropps were essentially overseers of a ethno-religious genocide.. same story different casts, well done...PK

It's funny how I missed this point earlier ...

but the U.S. invasion of Iraq doomed the indigenous Christian populace, and now there are almost no Christians left in Iraq. They were doing fine under Saddam Insane, but the Americans betrayed them and now they are basically either dead or refugees in Syria or God knows where.

We had a somewhat prophetic conversation-

we have a lot of Chaldean people in Michigan, greater Detroit area, the Chaldean church is an eastern rite catholic or Christian church. This population built on necessary exile from Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East. Yes, SoDamn Insane had many flaws, and the people of the country have a long history of ethnic violence.

We had an opportunity there to grow:
        Civilization depends on gaining the ability to handle situations like that, we could have instituted something to make long term change possible, help end civil conflict;

instead we handed out $2-300 billion in profits to the war machine.

Things are looking better since the inauguration...PK

          Yes ...

but I'm still not totally happy with our President. He's lolly gagging around when he should be accomplishing things. That Olympics stunt was pure crappola. There are far too many important things to be concerned about, and here he is vacationing in Denmark. It made him look like an idiot.

I hope he doesn't have any more vacuous stunts up his sleeve. We need some sensible leadership out of the whitehouse, not risible nonsense.

he will make more mistakes, he has taken on enormous problems and still has only scratched the surface, he will never get the credit he deserves for facing things most Presidents have evaded for the past 20 years. Yet he has created these expectations and must live with them.
The economy has not corrected and business seems intent on sabotaging the recovery by lopping off jobs, terminating businesses that should continue to prosper( Saturn auto) there is still those drainful wars in the middle east...so Olympics is not a front burner issue. Anyway, we still have reason to hope with this man, the one before blew out all the candles, not even a prayer with that guy.
            all the best...PK

              D'accord ...

but I still hope he starts acting more intelligently. Working with the Republicans has become his mantra. However, not even GOD could work with the Republicans. I hope he catches on before things get worse, or they will hand him his head on a platter. Then where will we be?

I'm painfully aware of just how atrocious the shrub really was, of course, but at least his party backed him on just about anything he tried to do. The damned Democrats can't even get their acts together long enough to vote together on procedural votes in the Senate. What kind of nonsense is that? It's not only disgusting, but scary as hell.

Anyway, we will just have to hope for the best. Not much else to do for now.

It's strange but the Bible speaks of the original sin being Eve eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge. Maybe seeking knowledge is the original sin and therfore knowlege itself is sinful. Getiing an education would be assuring our place in hell and perhaps what the intelligencia of these slaughtered races are experiencing karma.

    Naw.

    Interesting write. Thought provoking.

I think maybe you should go into hiding then if the best and cleverest get killed off first!

A very nice differen sonnet, I haven't really seen any that aren't around 10 syllables long. Your vocabulary is just immense, you really put across your point well. Good luck in the contest x
