My Sonnet for Jeff


Many thanks for giving me a life
And showing me the world of poetry,
Your words have filled my head and cut my strife
Through you the joy of po-ems I can see.

With Sapphic odes I think I’ve found my mark
Expressing into words just how I feel,
For I can write a story sad or dark
A simple couplet po-em is no deal.

A sonnet I still find so hard to write
My tutor reckons it will come with ease,
The time has come for me to stop the fight
Give way to rhyme and rhythm, it’s a breeze!

So I have written this for him to read
To let him know that I will yet succeed.

I wrote this in response to cricketjeff bullying me (in the nicest way possible) to write sonnets. This is my first unaided attempt.

    A poet born and bred has sung my praise
    I hope that I have helped her art to grow
    And now she'll occupy each of her days
    Telling all the world what it should know

    From sapphic odes on art to sonnet forms
    Or couplets that can make a statue cry
    The function that her poetry performs
    To entertain the likes of you and I

    So Sue I thank you for the sonnet here
    The first I hope of many you will write
    Please hold your talent as a gift most dear
    And try to keep your rhyme and meter tight!

    All of us can help our fellow man
    And doing that I know is in your plan!

    Jeff should be delighted with this, Sue. I admire anyone who can write sonnets and yours is very good. I don't often attempt the form myself, as I find it difficult, so well done you!
