In Germany, thousands of miles away
An apartment caught fire only yesterday
Many were trapped by flames and smoke
Twenty-four people trying not to choke
In this four story building the fire raged
Police and firemen were also engaged
Many on lower floors handed children out
Others jumped but missed rescue nets no doubt
Destroyed by flames the stairs couldn’t survive
Adults had no choice but to jump for their lives
But up on the top floor with no place to go
Were parents terrified for the child they loved so
Seeing no way for them all to get free
Tossing the baby, they prayed for safety
The nine month old girl fell four floors down
Where a crowd of people had gathered around
Some snapped pictures as she flew past
Caught in a policeman’s arms at last
Watching the scene on the noon news
I knew angels were surly being used
Waiting below with arms open wide
Striving to protect this baby inside
Quite a few died and I was certain
Without parents this babe would be hurtin’
But I had a surprise waiting for me
Both of them had managed to get free
I will never forget the photo of her falling
Or the miracle incurred when angels came calling

Wow! This is a powerful and emotional write. You did a great job showing all the human kindness and heroism in action. It reminds us that even with all the evil in the world there is still so much good too. Thanks for sharing and congratualtions on the silver. Blessings, Patty

I saw this. This, to me, showed the two faces of Man. The evil that started that fire. And the Human Angels waiting to catch the child. An act of hatred and racism, no doubt. Yet an act of goodness within humanity, saved that child's life.
Powerful piece Cathy.

DAMN!!! Did that baby really live! I mean that is the most chilling picture if it didn't!
This was a really amazing poem about such a tragic event. I am actually quite blown away by this, Cathy... it's really good. Hope you get trophy for this because you deserve one.

Good
"the (fired) raged" Typo The emotion and imagery are perfect. I felt the words as well as read them and they are powerful. Very well put with easy flow rhythm and impeccable imagery. The rhythm and story line are perfect and flow with a captive beat.
