The put on of your adolescent alter ego.
I've seen you dig that hole six feet in the ground,
But you didn't leave enough room to climb out.
Bloodshot eyes speak the words of a million failures,
The fire that burned so brightly now extinguished.
But now you're losing this game you thought you wanted to play,
And it's not gravity that’s holding you down tonight.
After days, you finally sleep without a lullaby,
The shiver and shake of your body as your soul's narrator.
Subtle memories preserve the past of what used to be,
The whisper of your name in your ear is your only reminder.
I've seen the moonlight shine on the web you've spun,
With strands so delicately woven of your deceptions.
But eventually just a single strand will unravel,
Leaving the lies so cautiously sculpted to fall to ruin.
Swiftly returning to the life that did this to you,
The key nestled in your hand unlocks my terror.
The poison coursing through your blood unchains this beast,
A slave to this figment of a person that you've become.
Author notes
I'm afraid- of him, of losing him or of having lost him already.
This poem illustrates the life of a friend and his speed addiction beginning from initial injection. It then goes on to describe the early effects of the high, to the days of being awake because of the drug, to the immediate crash thereafter. He continues to repeat this cycle. However, the drug changes him in ways he fails to see, and each time he resorts to using it, a little piece of who he is dies away.
As one of his best friends, it doesn't only scare me; it terrifies me.
Yet here I remain unable to save him from himself.

Your imagery and symbolism is very good- the best entered in this contest so far. Your fears come through very real Thank you for entering.

Wow, this is so powerful. Conveys a really strong message. I hope your friend will come to realize what he's doing to himself and to the ones that love him.
The poison coursing through your blood unchains this beast,
A slave to this figment of a person that you've become.
That last bit just, really wraps it up nicely. Gorgeously written.
