My funny Valentine
I had a very funny valentine
one year which was so weird it made me laugh.
It was a leap year - everything was going fine
a friend gave Pete this card on my behalf.
She said “It’s come from Sally, Pete, for you.”
He looked so shocked and spat his drink at her,
he choked, he gagged and started turning blue
and then fell down he didn’t even stir.
I ran to him “Oh Pete what have I done?”
as the crowd all gathered round I saw him grin
“It was a joke dear Sally just for fun.”
“Oh Pete, how could you?” and I slapped his chin.
Of course I laughed when the shock wore off at last.
I found that Beth had spilt the beans to Pete
and so he planned this joke as a kind of blast.
He meant no harm and thinks I’m kinda sweet.
Pete said “I’ll be your valentine dear Sal
I think you’re swell and proud I’ll be this day.”
And since that time we were the best of pals
until the time he moved and went away.
But now I have my Heathcote who loves me
and brings me gift’s and flowers all through the year.
He’s my true valentine - always will be.
He’s in my heart each day he’s such a dear.

Hilarious !
A sense of humour is a great thing to find in a friend.

Shared jokes are wonderful to remember - practical ones, not so much! I'm glad that your friendship was strengthened by this one.
Your last stanza puts it all in perspective - Valentine's Day is wonderful, but what counts is the little observations every day.
Best of luck in this contest, beaut entry!

Dear Hine,
I'm glad your 'funny valentine' turned out to be a treasured pal for you. And now you have Heath, much more than a pal..a love that's true!
I enjoyed your poem, it was fun to read! Best of Luck in the contest!

Dear Hine,
Some folk have a weird sense of humour and their 'jokes', when directed against another person, just don't come off. In fact, what is meant as a jest, if not carefully thought through in advance, can miscarry and cause hurt where it was supposed to be endearing. Far from raising a laugh it can arouse anger, misunderstanding and even cause the breakup of friendship.
In New Zealand, as in Australia, it is common practice to "sling off" at our best friends as a sign of endearment but I have learned, to my cost, that in other countries this is simply not understood and, with folk who take things more literally than we do, may cause real offence.
You should know this from having lived among those "ozzie bastards" before you married that "kiwi drongo" Heathcote!

Applause for your poem and good luck in the voting.
Love and hugs, XXX Hugh.
PS: I Put the wrong comment on this poem with an applaud before, then deleted it. Now the silly system won't let me applaud again. Why not? They're my points!! -
Dear Hine, Ohh what an awful trick to play on you, but funny as well, I can just picture the scene. HAHA
Great poem.
Love Jen.
