Saint Valentine

Gifts and flowers cloud the sky
as lovers flock into each other’s embrace
Bringing happiness and joy into their eyes
shining like a neon sign

But where did this indefectible holiday come from?

Where do its origins lie?
deserted lost in denial

It began in Ancient Rome
where the tigers and lions were used as fun
tearing and shredding everyone

When one day Emperor Claudius II made a decree
outlawing the marriage of the young and eager men
so that they would make harrowing soldiers of greed

But there was one who disagreed
angry at the words of the pampas emperor
and his name was Saint Valentine

He came to those in need
people who wanted wedded bliss
and preformed their marriage contract

This continued for many years until he was captured
caught by the cruel and ruthless emperor

Saint Valentine did die
beheaded for his passion filled crime
but his memory lives on

And now it has been just mere centuries
as we celebrate his brave act of love
Being glad we do not live in those scandalous times

I am very happy to have this write entered in my contest. It was very informative and gave a new meaning to Valentine's Day... and, infact, it IS the meaning and origin of it. So creative. This is the first poem I have seen that discussing the holiday's beginning, and I am very impressed by what I have read. Great way of sharing your knowledge with the rest of us!

I like this, and think it needs no improving. It tells the story very well. Valentines day...the day of anonymous Love, but unfortunately, these day's it's nothing more than mere commercilisation. We should boycott shops, and go back to tradition, lol
    Good writing!
