Self Love

When your sound-asleep feet first touch
the floor each morning, do you
stop and think “What wonderful feet I have?”

Do you touch the nape of your neck at random
times throughout the day
and say “I love the feel of my skin?”

Do you run your hands through your
misplaced, perfect hair and think, “How wonderful
it is to feel this thickness that is all mine”?

And when you slip from your clothes,
a basic shirt and jeans,
do you look long at yourself – your paleness, your
curved, sturdy frame, and think, “I am a portrait hanging
over somebody’s mantel”?

And this is my favorite part:
the very slipping of an earring through a hole –
the way you hold your head,
the way your hair falls
across your forehead.

These silent moments you have each day
just to look at yourself,
the gift of your body,
how beautiful you are.

How precious these moments should be.

This is a beautiful reminder to treat yourself as well as you would a dear friend. Self esteem is something I have struggled greatly with. I especially am struggling now because of extra weight gain from pain and medications. I am working on that, and it is very slowly coming off, but it is not easy. Actually, just this morning, I have been beating myself up inside my head for being over weight. After reading your write here I am reminded to appreciate myself for where I am at and for what I have been through. You can only do the best you can. Thank you for this powerful reminder. Beautiful! Patty

there have been times in my life when i've felt this way but on the whole... not. so i know what it feels like to be confident of myself. it's been an elusive feeling for years though.
    loved this... i really did
