In Front of My Eyes

In my dreams,
You are still alive
You are here,
As if nothing ever happened.

You are happy,
Like you use to be.
You  tell your jokes
And enjoy the evenings outside.

The whole family is happy,
Happy to be together.
We know that we all,
Truly, have something special.

I wish I realized it then
When it wasn’t a dream.
When you were here
In the flesh.

I’ve had dreams back to that day,
Always with a different ending,
Always good.
I save you ever time,
And tell you how much we love you.

Only in my nightmares,
I see it all.
Were you scared? Did you cry?
The thought of it kills me.

Our Fred?
This could never be our Fred!
He was such a genuine, happy person.
How could this be?

It all happened so quickly.
You were here,
And then you weren’t.

Now, I realize
That it wasn’t so sudden.
Everyday a part of you died.
Everyday we lost a little bit of you.

That is the true thought
That frightens me most.
I didn’t even see,
See that you were tearing up inside.

I had no clue,
Until the last few days.
Who’s next?
You?
Me?
Anyone!

Anyone, right in front of my eyes.
In front of your eyes!
We’d never know.

Starts out slow and quickly moves into a fast-paced emotional read. Well-written, Snowflake. This bursts with genuine sincerity.
