Born in the Winter.......(RIP Farrah)

One little girl
Who grew up too fast

In the blink of an eye
Eighteen years had passed

Born in the winter
As pure as snow

With pink little cheeks
You set hearts a-glow

Two tiny feet waving in the air
Two tiny hands wrapped up in mom's hair
A kiss on the nose, eyes opened wide

How were we to know time was quickly passing by ?

That mischievous brunette
With dark eyes and bright smile

Not a care in the world
Playing childhood's games

Teddy bears , crayons and coloring books
Dancing and singing "achey breaky" while everyone looked

A tear here and there
A pout and a frown

Oblivious to us, the years counted down...

As days turned to months
And months became years

Those that loved you were faced
With a new set of fears

Broken heart, dark days
Feeling alone, all of this to us remained unknown

The struggle, the heartache, the fights
Life turned around
Slowly drowning , you emerged, found your way out

That happy, shining face
On Graduation day,

The proud look in your parents eyes,
In my mind will always stay

College, a boyfriend, life was at your feet
The switch from journalism to psychology
"I want to help kids like me !"

I'll always remember that day when you confided in me....
Your fear of the future, of what will be,
Becoming an adult, your destiny

Little did we know
It was not to be

Born in the winter
As pure as snow

Gone in the winter
If only we could have known

A few regrets, a few should haves and would haves
One more hug, one more talk
One more laugh, one more smile

One little girl who grew up too fast
In the blink of an eye, eighteen years had passed

    Wow!

I like this poem a lot! At first I thought it was going be cliche, but it definitely wasn't. The fact that the poem starts out with the purity and happiness of childhood that so many people share makes the ending even more devastating. There was definitely a lot of emotion in this poem. I appreciated the foreshadowing of something not being quite right throughout the poem, but then the ending still coming as a surprise after the happiness of graduation, as I'm sure it was in real life. I also love the repetition of the first two stanzas repeated at the end of the poem because they have such a different meaning the second time around.

All of that being said, I'm sorry for your loss. Even an excellent poem doesn't make this type of loss easy to deal with.

Thank you. Writing this helped me to remember that even though her life was short, we all still had 18 wonderful years with her.
