"Unchained Melody"

Missing image
The record was playing; An old ‘Forty Five'.
We sat there and listened with tears in our eyes.
We knew all the lyrics and we sang along.
This was our moment; Our 'Special' song.

We were young lovers, just in our teens.
We were just learning to love so it seems.
'Unchained Melody' fell on our ears.
The lyrics, so special, throughout all these years.

I would soon be leaving to serve "Uncle Sam".
We were young and in love as we gently held hands.
The Righteous Brothers; Bobby Hatfield alone
sang the love song we considered our own.

Soon I’d be leaving to go overseas.
The time growing short between her and me.
"Time Goes By So Slowly"; The tears filled our eyes.
"I’ll Be Coming Home"; That’s when she cried.

And that final chorus, he started to sing.
We knew it's effect and the tears it would bring.
He'd hit that high note; His voice pure and fine.
"I Need Your Love"; Sent the chills up our spine.

Not a word had been spoken until the music subsides.
But, our silence spoke volumes of our feelings inside.
'Unchained Melody'; Our Special Love song.
Still in our hearts as the years rolled along.

Author notes

"Unchained Melody" by: The Righteous Brothers"

*A Dedication to 'Carol'!
I think everyone has that one 'Special' song that means so much to them. Some may have several.
These are the songs that upon hearing them, you are transferred to another point in time and memories, both happy or sad, come to the surface.
These are the songs that can bring the tears to your eyes or the smile to your face.
Music is a powerful tool and a universal language.
'Unchained Melody' was our 'Special Song'; A reminder
of our emotional first love.
It will remain that way for her and I throughout our lives.
Our Story is in the composition entitled 'Reunion' on this link:

    Sublimely composed...

This poem has the magical lilac scent, and the colors of the rainbow of wonders...
"Unchained Melody" gives me a vision of fireflies and butterflies flying for love... It is a poetic flower that abounds in nectar to nourish the hummingbirds of hearts that pump love through memories of blissful moments.

Much gratitude to the author of "Unchained Melody" for sharings this beauty, and for enriching the American Fine Letters.

    In respect and admiration,

    Andre Emmanuel Bendavi ben-YEHU

Is there anyone who hasn't got a memory that goes with this wonderful song? There are a few versions around the world and they release them with each conflict. This one was for our generation. You have written this so tenderly and I can just picture you two young lovers playing this song and clinging together. The intensity of first love, first heartbreak, beautiful memories. Sheila

    Hi,
This is lovely! Love that lasts the ages is always so beautiful. Like the great lovers of literature, Cathy and Heathcliff, Darcy and Elizabeth, Mark Anthony and Cleopatra....., there are great lovers who's story never gets told. They each have their wonderful stories, though the world might call them ordinary people. True love is never ordinary. Music is a delight and those who can perform or write it are the worlds treasure. Thank you for sharing this.

This certainly deserves a gold trophy, in fact several of them especially because you chose titles that we could easily connect with even though I don't remember who The Righteous Brothers are and same goes for Bobby Hatfield... but I'm sure they must be great according to taste.

This is a very romantic and sweet dedication. I also like it because it is written of an elderly couple's love. I find those writes to be very serene and charming. It just has this certain delicacy, because the love has been carried on for a longer period of time, and it's still beautiful like back in the days. This is majestic and very unique, because not only have you included songs to go along with it, but these songs have a place in your heart. That's so sweet.
Thanks for entering your write in "Enter All Your Love Writes Here!", and good luck!

This is beautiful. Sad, because you ended up being parted whilst you went to fight for your country, but at the same time beautiful because you've lasted so long and that you have these beautiful memories. A beautiful song to have as your own, I love it. I love the way you lock the lyrics of the song within the poem... it's really sweet.

I have a couple songs like that. I love "Unchained Melody". Growing up I only listened to the oldies stations, country, and daddy's rock'n'roll. I didn't listen to the music of "my generation" until I was in highschool. This song was always a favorite. It's such a soulful and passionate song.

This is a beautiful poem. Even more beautiful because it is dedicated. It gives me great hope that people still stay together "as the years roll along".
