I was called a genius today,
by mistake of course.
She asked me what she could
place around her neck to keep warm
I suggested a scarf -
“you’re a genius,” she laughed.
I smiled thinking, if I’d
invented the scarf on a cold Winter's
day, I would be a genius (and very rich).
But I didn’t.
I’ve never invented anything.
Except in school when I made
an alarm which I‘d designed to
guard my diary from intruding
fingers, but I was ten and that
was several years ago.
I remember that day,
the teacher gave me a gold star
for creativity and she said
I was ‘a star;’ not a genius.
Shakespeare, Dickinson and
Plath; they were literacy genii.
Whereas, Newton, Pasteur and Einstein
were undeniable genii.
But I am not.
I merely answered a question,
and then wrote about a scarf.

We all have odd days...and can find inspiration in the oddest of moments. Well, I know I can. I am known to write about coffee...sigh. My only suggestion here is this stanza...
I smiled and thought,if I’d
invented the scarf on a cold winter's
day, I would be a genius (and very rich).
But I didn’t.
I would tighten it a bit...
I smiled thinking
if I'd invented the scarf
on a cold Winter's day
maybe I would be
a genius; and probably
even rich.
Something to that effect. I know you didn't ask my opinion so ignore it if you like...Trina
