Second Chances

Throwing youth needlessly into the prison system is, in a word, unpardonable. Ignorance at this level is far from bliss; it is a dereliction of duty. The United States of America was forged by people who sought, little more, than a second chance. Closing a door upon one’s problems does not make them go away even if the glimmer of a doorbell is removed. The youth of today did not make this world the way it is and societies must bear in this accountability and ensure that appropriate time is given for less receptive feet to find their path.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. This is not merely an insightful anecdote but the mantra of humanity. Perseverance is not a talisman born equally unto all citizens. The youth of today are not born resilient. As we reach young adulthood, we are forced to come to terms with the world around us. Some of us evolve the essential thick hides, oblivious blind eyes and necessary drive for achievement readily while others are not so quickly assimilated. Not all coping mechanisms can be learned in a classroom. Many of us take longer periods of time to fall into progressions of societal structure and are easily perplexed— confused by a society than places the “pursuit of happiness” above basic human requirements. Our perspectives and reflective temperaments are unique.

Why, in a country that calls itself the greatest in the world, are we leaders in prison incarceration, drug addictions, prostitution, homelessness, poverty and the ownership of guns? How has a measure of compassion become too much to ask? In our over-entrepreneurship society, rehabilitation and mental health care should be as fundamental as healthcare. We are only as strong as our weakest link— please do not allow the waywardness of youth to masquerade less. If society has any virtues to exemplify, let patience be among them.

The word “civilization” implies a system of social hierarchy which in turn denotes a measure of accountability towards all its citizens— especially those that have not yet found their way. It is about teaching and leading by example. It is about reaching out and helping those who have fallen ill— and there are so many illnesses. Sweeping fertile soil beneath a carpet does not make it dirt— though eventually decay settles in and the fabric of the carpet is no less soiled. Addictions are diseases, mental illness is an illness. A single player out of key puts the integrity of the orchestra at risk. What is the conductor’s next best step? Should the player be hidden or taught how to play? Let’s make the right decision and lead by example. Our youth deserve no less.
