Working Girl

The city streets can be so unforgiving.

For the working girl, trying to make herself a living.

She left home when she was only thirteen.

Step-daddy beat her with no-one to intervene.

She walks the night looking for a trick.

The men that she meets make her real sick.

She swallows her pride and does the deed.

The belly that she has, she knows she must feed.

There is no rest for a working girl.

Her life continues to swirl and swirl.

Night by night and day by day.

Her spirit is broken and will decay.

She looks to the pipe to relax her nerves.

The syringe on the ground quietly observes.

The heroin is just a matter of time.

It's symphony will call her with it's mercy-less chime.

It's the heart and soul that she won't have anymore.

From this horrific life she didn't choose to explore.

She was forced into the streets by mangled situation.

Now she's received her degree in street life education.

Such a sad truth that young girls and sometimes even guys after being abused will go out into the streets thinking 'anything will be better than this' but infact it just stays as bad and they have to go through terrible things and even moreso to learn the ways of life, the cruel hard truths, first hand often.

Very powerful words, and sadly, very true also. This is a difficult topic in general and that you are a man and see the situation as it truly is, and not glorified as a great income earner, says alot about your character as a man. Your good people. No woman enjoys this, though they may play the part well. Someone, at some time lowered their self-esteem and the girls feel this is all their qualified to do, or their forced to do it. Desperation, may lead them to this world, but there is a choice in most circumstances. They just choose the wrong one. But one thing is certain, the majority (85%) were molested at some point in time. I've known many over the years and not one denied it. Fabulous write, as always.

its so good i can barley discribe it! i mean you really related to the life of a young girl with only one way to turn. and the sad thing is is that most girls that where abused usually do go into prostitution. VERY GOOD!!!!

Great visual images throughout the poem. A lovely sense of compassion for the woman comes through your words, softening the subject and encouraging the reader to empathise with her situation. A thoughtful write. Well done!
