Dad

Sitting on your shoulders
I was six feet tall
Wincing at the fireworks
Gripping your neck
For dear life
I knew then
You would never let me go

The moment I was born
I met my best friend
That was you, dear dad
A love like ours will never end

Please tell me what you think

I am envious. My dad died when I was 15 and we didn't get along all that well (infact we only got along in the last few months before he died, because we both sort of realised that we didn't have the time to argue anymore).

Now I'm a lot older, and watching my brother with my niece and nephews, I sometimes wish I still had my dad. But I'm more and more longing for my own kid. I'm a bit clucky I guess. Besides, having your own kids allows you to torture them 24/7

The way you placed the final verse after the tender, powerful first verse, is very effective. Your first baby thought, of your father, and now looking back, you knew then what you know now, and your a full grown adult sitting on his shoulders, wincing, as he protects you, from the fireworks... you knew then he would never let you go, never stop being there for you ... and also, unspoken, you will never let him go, will always be there for him.

    An elegant, beautiful dedication.

Awwww.... that's so sweet and heart warming
I wish I could say that about my dad...
    But none the less!!

    "I knew then
You would never let me go"

    "I knew then
You would never let me go"

    Two great lines

A most gentle and delightful view of the man in your young (and older?) life. You have managed sentiment without descending into maudlin sentimentality. Well done

    Such a heartwarming piece!!!

These lines describe the great love you have for your father. You're an inspiration for all dads and daughters. There's nothing more precious than a father/daughter relationship. "The moment I was born, I met my best friend". You are a true visionary poet! Thanks for blessing humanity with your wonderful verses!!!
