Waltzing on a Layered Lake

Winter swamp in alder forest,
Paradise as far as the eye can see,
Only the paradise of desolation
Jack Frost leaps from tree to tree

Hark! There on the surface stands
A stately couple, holding hands
The maiden dressed in blue and white
The groom in colours of the night

The hammer gives a double-knock;
The visit ends at two o’clock
As the hour now progresses
The groom kneels down and confesses

Waltzing on a layered lake
While the snow darts round like fireflies
Is this a chance you’re gonna take?
Like the ice, you’ll make or break
But I don’t want you to drown

Rolling down hills, down and down
Down to the river, broke my crown
Tried to mend authority, but couldn’t make a change
Now I’m a friendly nomad, living off senility

Waltzing on a layered lake
While the snow darts round like fireflies
Is this a chance you’re gonna take?
Like the ice, you’ll make or break
But I don’t want you to drown

Patterns echo in the trees, in my mind, in the trees
In the sky, in the echoes, in the leaves
We were dancing side by side and now you’re nearly gone
Took your hands, your lips from mine and left me to hold on
Hold on

Waltzing on a layered lake
While the snow darts round like fireflies
Is this a chance you’re gonna take?
Like the ice, you’ll make or break
But I don’t want you to drown

But you’ve already drowned
And I’m left with only memories
As the winter wind writes bitter symphonies
With jagged snowflakes as the notes
Now I’m lost; I can’t be found
Now I’m the sky, now I’m the ground
Now I’m neither hell nor heaven bound

I’m just
Waltzing on a layered lake
While the snow darts round like fireflies
This was the chance I chose to take
Like the ice, I make or break
But what’s the point? I’ve already drowned
While the snow darts round and round

Illumination of the northern lights
Heal me of my wounds and bites
As I lie here, listening to the loons
Staring at the conquered moon
The moon I’ll never get to touch
Like your face, it’s gone forever
On this cold night in December
Living free is a dying ember

Waltzing on a layered lake
Now I know the chance I take
Standing here above your grave
From below, the ice will break
I hope this is my last mistake.

Author notes

I wrote this a while ago. It's inspired by a poem of Robert Frost's called "A Winter Eden"... I thought the whole idea of a groom visiting his drowned fiancee in the winter when the ice had frozen over (so he could get near her) was interesting. The poem's very dark and relationship-oriented, which was my state of mind at the time.

  • Generally long poems I lose interest but this one kept me and I must say most beautifully so. Great job and I can feel and see this acutely.

I loved this. It actually reminded me of something they would probably sing in old days around Christmas time. Maybe the "Hark" had something to do with that! Anyway, this had a great rhyme scheme, lovely imagery and it has to do with wind, so thank you so much for entering and good luck.
