Alzheimer's Land

Giving!  Living! Loving! Losing!
a few of the roles I have to play,
In the land of Alzheimer's
where my gran is there to stay.

So what would you do when you can't tie your shoe?
remember how to wash and dress or toddle to the loo?
Very simple daily tasks, both for you and me
But in the land of Alzheimer's even these fail to be!

Her mind is forever clouded, even thinking is a chore
I think I was a grandmother, I had people I did adore.
But in the land of Alzheimer's the faces she ignores,
unable to remember that once she loved us more.

I danced with her the other day,
she laughed and giggled oh so much.
Feelings of hopelessness for a moment out of touch,
but in the land of Alzheimer's I guess you'll never know,
how hard it is to leave you there and never take you home.

Very nicely written piece on the awful consequences of this horrible disease, from sufferers and relatives alike. I just wish more money went on research and treatment. If care homes had more staff it would help too, as we can't give the individual attention that we'd like.

    Yes I know.

Today my patient did forget that she had to go to the potty chair to urinate. She was still sitting on a bed that was unmade when my relief arrived. You too know this disorder very well.

I've read a lot about this particular disease and you brought it to the reader so greatly. This speaks so much of pain and hurt, yet about beauty that can be found in life, even while during this hard disease. Wonderfully written!

This is a dreadful disease and the number of people that are afflicted with it continues to grow each day. Dimentia has to be one of the hardest things. Not knowing anyone or what you are supposed to do. It is scary. Thank you for sharing this with me. Keep writing poet. seamaiden ♥

    Aw wow. So sad..
But I definitely liked how the format of the poem sounded so cheerful; it contradicted with the actual matter of the poem. (Listen to the song "Lollipop" by Mika and he does the same thing.)

interesting choice of the rhyming scheme with the subject matter; i think it kind of reveals a reversion back to a child-like state that comes with the unfortunate disease of Alzheimers. i really like how you call it the "land of Alzheimer's", like it is a fictional world not easily attainable by most people. it really shows the divide that is created by the disease. good job!

Oh, this was soooo sad. I've never really been close to someone who had the disease, but I know how bad it is, which you really delved into successfully. Good luck in the contest.

Alzheimer's is a sad condition, some people can't/won't understand it, but this is a well written piece and the emotions run deep.

This is so sad! but unfortuntelly very true... I know that my grandmother had to be tested for this, she couldn't remember how to make toast, it is such a sad disease. It's hard to believe that the mind totally forgets, I have heard stories that some people can relive events that has happened 30 years before and they think that it only happened 2 hours ago. Very sad... one thing that I have found fascinating about this disease though is that when a person with alzheimer's die they die in the fetal postion, (the way they were born) very mind boggling. Great write mum!

Oh yes, this is so understandable for those of us who have loved ones in this situation. Liked the flow and the message you convey through these words. Good rhythm and rhyme as well. Such a sad state to be in, more so for the loved ones than the person with the disease, as they do not remember anything.

Very nice poem conveys the youthful exhuberence of some who are unfortunate to be in the position of having this tradgedy inflicted upon them.
The use of the rythm and rhyme is infectious making the reader hurry for more BUT,
Only one comma at the end of a line?
