And Still I Dither

And still I dither and still I waver;
does God exist and does He favour
saint or sinner, man or beast?
(it worries me, to say the least).
Sometimes I think that God is fiction
and religion a maze of contradiction,
and sometimes I think it must be true
that God's alive for me and you.
Did everything happen by random chance;
the cold equations of quantum dance?
Or is there really a Prime Creator
who made the bee and the alligator?
Some folks think there's no solution
to the problem of God and evolution,
but unless He shows Himself in history,
God will remain the final mystery.
And still I dither and still I doubt--
I just can't work the answer out!

Author notes

Although this is a semi-humorous piece, my underlying position should be clear. I am an agnostic, believing that there is no way of proving or disproving the existence of God. While not entirely ruling out the possibility of a divine intelligence or creator, I'm more inclined to place my trust in the discoveries of science, rather than the "revelations" of the Bible, Koran or any other "holy book." Such books, in my opinion, merely express the opinions of their authors, and can in no way be taken as literal truth or proof. Faith is no substitute for knowledge.

    Forgive me for momentarily commenting on your content before I get into your actual piece. I just wanted to point out that science in many cases (in fact if you really explore you'll find ALL cases) supports the 'revelations' of the Bible. I do not say that to question your intelligence or beliefs, I merely wished to put my two cents in. Switching to your piece, nice rhyme. You did a good job in maintaining a good rhythm and rhyming without making it sound childish or obvious that you were trying to rhyme. You also affectively explained your beliefs while being humorous, not always easy to do. A good piece, and I appreciate the added narration in the author notes, I always like to see where writers are coming from. Thank you for entering the contest, and good luck.

    and so through endless time we blunder
    to sneer...and say we know?
    or grin...and say we wonder?

    I liked this a lot. Good flow and natural rhyme, not forced. Good luck in my contest!

    It takes a mind to dither and waver
    To make a thing that we all favor
    With no mind we don't exist
    Make things with a unique twist

    Anything we do or say
    Takes a plan to do that way
    Cars aren't made by random chance
    Nor are we in nature's trance
