Dialog with a Tree
I will never forget that forest walk
as I skipped down the wooded path that day.
The day that I learned that trees could talk,
when a wise old oak was watching me play.
I looked at the tree and said: “why do you gawk?"
He responded and said: “hello and good day."
My mouth was agape in utter surprise,
I had to exclaim: “I apologize!”
Politely I curtseyed and replied: “excuse me."
“I never have talked to a tree before."
He said: “I’m a friend, you can plainly see,
small creatures and children are whom I adore.”
It felt very strange to talk to a tree.
He must be the forest ambassador.
I looked up at him as I brushed off a curl.
He said: “What is your name dear sweet little girl?"
I blushed at him saying: “My name is Sue;
I am pleased to meet you, sir tree in the wood.”
He replied in kind saying: “How do you do?
I would shake your hand, if only I could”.
He smiled when I said: “may I play with you?”
With a jolly reply he said: “I think you should."
So I hung on his branch and I started to swing.
That day in the forest was so amazing.

Interesting idea. And I will have to try this form, it's new to me!
I like the first 4 lines of the poem best. They are the punch line to me. Thanks for sharing.

-
cute
little girls talking to strangers, but its a fairy tale where all is right in that world ..
made me smile, a childrens tale indeed ; if trees could talk , the lumberjack would
balk .

I have never heard of this form of poetry before, no do I think I could replicate it in writing myself. This is very well done; I stand back and gape in awe, having never been courageous enough to experiment with other forms.
-
Thank you for pointing me in this direction. This is an excellent form for narration. I have taken a note of its construction for future experiment. You have written this one out extremely well with the rhythm and flow following the storyline. I can only congratulate you.

-
Thank you for your entry in the contest. Jeff and I have always loved this Ottava Rima, especially me for purely personal reasons, but as you know we have a rule, each poet is allowed one prize only.
All the best to you in the contest.
Sue and Jeff

How sweet!
And of course trees can talk.
There is no doubt about that. I used to sit in a tree for hours, dreaming. Once I had fallen from an orange tree and still has a VERY fine line on my right thigh (for the tree had THORNS), which I can see if I stretch my skin.
I also wrote a story called Viola, about a girl dreaming high up in a tree ...
I am a tree-hugger.
Blessed be, Amera. ]
Love,
Myra

When you're a dog you see a tree differently
I don't care even if it talks to me... no
It is a thing that I will use to go upon to pee
On, yes, a thing upon which I will surely go
Even if that tree talks to me... As you can see
I have a limited vocabulary... so
I wouldn't be saying much to the tree anyway
Cause I don't really have very much to it to say -
Easy flowing verses, easy to read and understand, light and happy emotions from the very beginning. Like a happy story for kids. Nice done.

If you look carefully you can see where I carved our initials in that tree, surrounded by a heart. Fortunately, I did not try to do an ottiva rima or the tree would be sawdust.
This is beautiful and flows like a dream. The story is magnificent and the tecnique is stunning. A winner in all ways. Great work.

-
This is a beautiful write, Sis. Wonderful flow and imagery. For some reason, the part of the tree talking made me think of the Pocahontas movie. Talking tree.
I love the pic, too. Great inspiration for a write. Good luck in the contest.

Amera, Amera, how I admire thee, you write about most anything; sprituality, people and trees!
God Bless you and your bountiful talents. This is a stunning piece. You should write children books of poetry.

This is such a whimsical journey! And and outstanding prompt for your poetic prowess!!! Don't count me out of formal poetry YET! Just reading fine work keeps that home fire burning....

-
You certainly have some talent
This poem was really a good poem for the promp. I looked at the promp and had no idea of a poem. Your rhyme is smooth an dflows with ease. It is not forced. I smiled as I read your words. Keep-up the good work. You seem to enjoy the craft of poetry and are good at it. It is indeed an honor to know your work. And GOOD LUCK in the contest.
