My weird friend
I have this friend, she has this strange sense of humour.
On Christmas day she came to my door with a red box.
“Merry Christmas Jen” she said. “I should’ve come sooner
to give you your gift and no, it’s not a box of chocs.”
I took it gingerly for it was moving about.
‘Oh no, it’s not a cat or dog!’ I thought to myself.
I opened the top of box and then I started to shout
“A monkey! How nice Val, did you get one yourself?”
"I must admit he’s cute in his Santa Claus suit
but what am I gonna do with a Chimpanzee Val?
How can I look after such a playful brute
and keep my sanity? I thought you were my pal?”
With that the rascal jumped out and climbed on the curtains.
He started swinging from side to side making noises.
“Come down here, Chimp or you’ll be a gonna for certain."
But would he listen? No, we tried raising our voices.
He kept swinging all over the house and making a mess.
He started tossing things at us he looked mad
I went and grabbed some banana’s and, I must confess,
once he settled down he wasn’t quite so bad.
I cussed Val and told her to take him away.
If this was her idea of a joke it wasn’t funny
the monkey looked as if to say "Can I stay?"
He looked sadly at me but I said "I’m sorry Sonny."
So off Val went to take him back to the zoo
as she had talked a friend into playing a trick on me.
I had to laugh. I couldn’t help it, wouldn’t you?
And what did Val give me? You’ll have to wait and see.
That was the wackiest gift I’d ever received.
I know it sounds too far fetched to be believed.

That is an amazing story, and very well told, too. My mom gave me a cat once, and a few years later I gave it back. My life is too tame, evidently!

Sonny, that would be a good name for a monkey, "Sonny Monkey." Yeah, that works.
