I defended my dogs
as if they were my brother & sister.
Two mutts picked up off the street,
that I was allowed to keep in our
backyard in a old firewood shed
built by my grandfather, dead
6 years before the first came along.
I defended my dogs against all
sly remarks of purity pedigree
nobility, stupidity!
They were my friends my only friends.
Me the youngest kid on the block,
with no older sibling to demand of others.
I’d be counted into the game
about to be played.

1st of all, thank you for submitting a poem in this option. Not too many people were up to the challenge of writing about their pets.
2nd of all, I really enjoyed the way you wrote this. Not metered... just laid back. Nicely done.
