In the middle of nowhere he's tied to a fence
Broken and bleeding and it doesn't make sense
All he can do is hang there and try to understand why
They tried to break him and then just left him to die
They had pistol whipped him as he begged for his life
The pain so unbearable it cut worse than a knife
He was left crying and shivering in the freezing air
In so much pain that his body just could not bear
What they did to this gentle spirit was so wrong
Yet his soul held on and tried to be strong
But on October 12th the world cried as one
'Cause on that day it had lost a son
Now he's embraced by a love so pure and true
Free from judgment and hate and all the taboo
He’s enfolded by a tender and caring set of wings
Living in peace while the world mournfully sings
He's flown to a place that's so far away
And he isn't hated just because he's gay
Where sadness and pain don't mean a thing
And society's cruelty no longer stings
In this place his gentle spirit can mend
And all unearned hurts can finally end
He is finally free, that's the beautiful truth,
In this place of eternal youth
Author notes
I wrote this for Matthew Shepard, a college student from Wyoming whose murder was devastating.
Rest in peace Matthew...

Wow, you really did an excellent job on this. It is really sad. But you really explained what had happened to him. This is very touching and heartfelt. Excellent job.

Thank you, it took me a while to write it. I wanted to explain what happened to him without making it too graphic, I wanted it to be tastefully written. What happened to him was very uncalled for. Thanks for reading, I'm glad you liked it.

It is truly horrifying that people could treat people this way, simply for things they don't understand. It really makes you think...
