That night! Did it bespeak of gloom!
The rotted kingdom in her doom,
did steal a fairest bride from groom,
that dreadful night in Rome!
Decay in every crevice wept
as decadence and filth had crept
and plundered her without except--
the suicide of Rome!
Her terror as her children shrieked!
Germanic Hordes, the death they wreaked!
Then-- silence as the anguish peaked--
the agony of Rome!
No popes or emperors gave aid;
their power-- it no longer stayed,
to see how apathy had made
the night of death in Rome!
Dear Rome, how Cæsar failed this night!
How Constantine ignored your plight!
How Paul did warn you of your might--
you killed yourself, fair Rome!
Eternal City, your demise--
O, how it brings the Weeping Skies,
whilst they watch as the City dies,
the fair city of Rome!
And oe'r the burning Crests, I saw--
Urbs iuguolo ipsa!
Until she, bleeding, was left raw;
the madness of our Rome!
The savage waste-- she's been laid bare!
And plundered for her wealth and ware,
and leaving naught but ruin there,
they left Eternal Rome!
And now she still remains in shame,
the end of all her lustrous fame,
for after thence she'd been left maimed,
the end of fairest Rome.
Her splendor though has since returned,
though never been the same since burned,
a Vactican display had learned
the arrogance of Rome!
Her ruins now tell her sad tale
of misery in grim detail;
her histories have since grown stale,
that City once called Rome.
Her telltale ruins still do tell
of how she died; a night of hell,
and how her future can't bode well,
the remnants of her Rome.

Author notes
this is just a poem I wrote about the fall of Rome and the semi-return. I'm not really sure why I wrote it, I just did. I'm not weird, of course not.
Please tell me what you think

Good job. I was in Rome in 1996 for the first time and couldn't get quite a good look at this at the time. But now I have. Thanks for all the info and everything. It was interesting to read.

Extraordinary!
Strange, that I was thinking about Nero a little while ago.
This is as interesting as a poem can be, or would hope to be.
I've always loved this rhythm and rhyme scheme.
I think you've made a great contribution to lyric poetry with this one.

As much as I did like it, I do not believe that Rome died, since you go there and find buildings still standing
Think of it more as in a deep sleep...like a bear!...yes, I did just compare a city to a bear
And of course you're not weird, Love
Just a maniac XD
Good to see you're posting daily again
and would that just happen to be your Italian name up there?

Or did you just make that up to be all cool
You don't need names for that, Hun
I love you
