An enigmatic face and form,
Close wrapped by leaves and vines.
All nature peering from within,
Creation here defined.
It seems all wisdom’s gathered there,
And merged within the two,
When nature and humanity
Co-mingle through and through.
Sir Gawain it was who wore the green
At Arthur’s table round,
And fought the mighty green knight too,
A tale that still astounds.
The green knight drawn from our green man,
G’wain’s sword did fell his head.
The green knight put it back in place
And challenged G’wain instead.
A part of Norse or Celtic lore,
Green-ringed foliate head.
Ancient sign of life’s’ renewal,
Made of stone . . . and dead.
A contradiction of a sort,
This pagan man of stone,
Carved on churches everywhere
As though their very own.
This much-carved face that speaks of life,
And creativity,
In nature and ‘midst mankind too,
Can speak to you and me.
And so the green head tells of life,
Renewal of the earth.
And couples touch that leaf-ringed face,
In hopes of giving birth.
So view that image posted here,
With hope and rev’rance too.
And touch that ancient Celtic face
To see what it can do.
