The gift from our Son

Missing image
The gift from our Son

To me the single precious gift of all
is one that made my heart expand with pride.
“Dear Mum I had to leave. I heard the call.
This gift's from me for you and Dad to ride.”

A car, I know, does not replace a Son.
I’d rather have him here but that can’t be.
We bought this car in memory of one
whose life was short, an active man but free.

Brian rides with us I know when he is there.
I love to feel the smile upon his face
and know he’s happy now without a care.
"But Brian, you know this car I’ll never race."

And though the gift came earlier last year
and not at Christmas time, it’s still the best
of all his gift’s that helps me feel he’s near-
a car for us to share among the rest.

Bob cleans the car most days - it helps him cope.
It sparkles in the sun and still looks new.
It gives him comfort, fills his heart with hope
and helps to ease the pain of missing you.

So please don’t think this poem should sound sad.
It’s Brian's special gift for Mum and Dad.

AUTHOR’S NOTE

Brian had no wife or family and we as next of kin received enough to buy the car as “Our gift from Brian”
“But Brian you know this car I’ll never race.” This was a joke between Brian and I when he’d be in our car, or I was in his and he’d go over the speed limit.
I like to remember the happy times and the sense of humor Brian still has
and is still known fondly as “The cheeky bugger.”

    :-(

This was a beautiful tribute to your son. It's good that you celebrate what he was, rather than mourning the events that so cruelly took him from you before his time. It speaks volumes of his character that he can still inspire this kind of sweet, upbeat poem.

    My dearest Joan,

I must share something uncanny that closely relates to Brian giving you the "gift". My cousin passed on October 19th of last year. He had just bought a brand new car. I am in need of a car. Just the other day, I spoke to my Aunt because I am interested in purchasing his car. It only had 2,000 some miles on it. He died four months after he bought the vehicle (which resembles your "cheeky bugger", except it is a rust color). His car will be mine as soon as the car is placed in my Aunt's name. I hear Bruce saying; "let Renee have the car". I know it's mine and what a special gift it is. I think I may have been the one to ride in the car most with my cousin. We used to sit in it at family functions to smoke our cigarettes and talk. I may have even burned a hole in his seat with an ash. LOL

I needed to read this poem. It is providence to me. Now I know for sure the car is mine. I will let you know the very first day I drive it.

Good for all of you. The best way to keep the spirit of a loved one alive is with the humor and joy they shared.

The best to you in the contest.

    Always Loving YOU ♥

    Renee

There's no doubts that Bruce wants you to have the car, and did you notice, both their names start with B that's even more uncanny.
I'm happy you shared this with me and yes, please let me know when you drive it and if the burn mark is there.
He's still a cheeky bugger and loves playing jokes on all of us.
I must tell you, he knows I gave his clothes away to charity and he reckons his clothes have seen more of Sydney than he did! The cheeky bugger. LOL

Love to you and your family.

      Love Joan

Well it's a little sad, maybe more so from the reader's point of view. For you, you have the fondness of what the car means and that brings comfort I'd guess. I have no kids so I'll never know that pain (and of course not that love either) but I certainly understand the feelings behind your poem and why that car is a symbol of far that it might appear to those uninvolved.

    Excellent!

An excellent poem my Australian friend. I love the poem just as I love you and your family. I know that Brian would be proud of the car and the way that Bob takes care of it. Good luck in the contest Joan.

Beaut car! This is a lovely poem Joan, as you show how memories and memorials make a great difference in accepting loss and proceding with life. You make a good example for us.

    Dear Bea,

To lose a child's so hard to bear.
The pain won't seem to ease
unless we can find refuge here
    in happy memories.

I know the lovely car Brian gave
he's blest for you and Bob
and, cheeking from his garden grave,
says: "Get on with the job!"

I still think that Bob should get a lean-to shelter built so that he won't have to be out in all weathers keeping the new car polished! Just keep at him about it before he rubs the beautiful blue paint off and you have patches of pink showing through!!
Applause for your lovely poem about Brian's great gift to you both and best of luck in the voting.
Love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

      Dear Hugh,
I've tried and tried my friend to talk Bob into building a carport, but no luck yet. At least it's behind the gate now.

Thank you Dear Maureen, Brian does not want us to be sad, believe me, he's enjoying himself where he is. It's good for me to let my emotions out in a poem, but sometimes I have a little weep which is normal, but then I think of all the funny things he did and I laugh then, knowing he's laughing with me.
      Love you sweet Soul/Sister.
      Joan
