I mince no words...

Missing image

When you're good
people tend to give praise.

But don't let the unthinkable
occur.

Left breast removed
or was it the right?

Who knows!

These tits were never past
training bra proportions
anyway.

Then,
the stroke!

Good Heavens,
pity is an awful gesture
of goodwill.

"Whatever happened to baby Jane"

This 'N That

I had a stroke damn it!
I didn't die!

I know...smoking is not good for you.
Neither is drinking or acting for that matter.
But no one minded those vices.

"I was born liberated",
if you weren't

then you need to try a rebirth.
If forging through the womb

a second time

spills over,
you know you've arrived.

Oh how I laugh

at them.
Those who think they know;
as if...

They sicken me,

trying to estimate the validity of frailty.

Thanks Kath--
for resurrecting me.

You knew my gumption all along!

Author notes

"Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety"
~Shakespeare of Cleopatra

In the cover insert of the book "This 'N That" - BETTE DAVIS" © 1987 , Michael Herskowitz wrote;

"If the Bard of Avon had been a Hollywood screenwriter, Bette Davis would have played the part."

I have read this book three times since it was given to me in 1990 as a gift from an actor friend of mine. You have prompted me to re-visit the life of Bette Davis.

In this poem, I simply gave snapshots of her wonderful quip. It would take an epic poem to fully engross the reader in the splendor of the book. Get it! Read it! Become friends with it!

"Kath" is Kathryn Sermak, her assistant for eight years, who had faith in Bette Davis' ability to snap back after her illnesses.

I knew you'd come to play. I'm glad you did, too. It's funny the different characters we find so inspiring and comforting. I love her gumption, too. And the word gumption by itself

    Thank you, renee.

    Good luck.

Love it, your appeal as an outspoken, deep feeling, talented writer is enhanced with this enticing piece. I think this will be my next book purchase. I think I owe myself a trip to Barnes and Noble

By the way, "Whatever Happend To Baby Jane" has long been on my list of favorite movies

Good luck in the contest, Sis

I will get it and read it

and if your poem is similar to the style of the book, I'm sure I'll love it!

snappy, witty, strong and very womanly (don't ask me to explain...a kind of pride?)

thanks for the read and recommendation

  • Great job like your style!

    Great Tribute

I'm going to have to get that book. I have
always been a fan of her movies. She was a great
talent, a cut above the rest. I bet the book
    is fascinating.

Wow. This is a wonderful poem. I love the strength of the words. Reading the notes after was interesting. I always liked Bette Davis. I have never read that book - I will have to now.

There is so much to take from this poem, Renee and it made me proud and grateful to be a woman, to be alive and well. You wrote this snapshot of her life and her spirit with such style and compassion - loved it.
