Ettersberg II

barbed wire
endless world of dying
captured in sadness
behind this fence

here, you are
either 'healthy'
or dead

I am dead

I walk around
without caring anymore

it's easier not to think
lay down
drift off

and wake up
in a better place

Living in Germany must lead to profoundly intense thoughts and feelings about the actions of the Nazis. A poignant and beautiful poem, Annie.

      Hey Mel
I just re-read your comment on this piece... And gosh, you can't possibly imagine just HOW RIGHT you were when you said that. Today there was a rally of the neo-Nazi party in my hometown. Imagine that! Luckily, there was a counter demostrastion by poeple who are not afraid of standing up for what they believe in!

Intense piece. Powerful "either 'healthy' or dead/i am dead/...without caring anymore". There is truly a kind of death that comes from withdrawing into self from caring about others. When surrounded by overwhelming levels of misery and suffering, death looses much of its fearsome aversion, and may gradually become welcome friend.
Well written with terse economy of words.

An excellent write dear niece! Yes the horrors remembered are often to much to bear and drifting to another p[lace is the way many cope.
All the best with this thought provoking write
