Take To The Sky

Take To The Sky

I watched through the glass as they took to the sky

and wondered how many more men had to die

With their faces so young and their spirits so bold

I knew there were many who’d never grow old

I thought of the enemy, men just the same

who fought for their country, with no fear or shame

At the first sign of trouble, the ring of the bell

don’t wait for answers, start running like hell!

Bill waved as he passed on his way to his plane

my heart crying out, “Will I see you again?”

His mop of blonde hair and his cute crooked grin

his sweet words of love put my head in a spin

“I love you”, I said, as he rose in the air

with so much bravado and so little care

The hours I waited as all life stood still

the sweet sound of Merlin would give me a thrill

There’s many that never returned to the base

forgotten they’re not, in my heart there’s a place

I married my Bill, that was fifty years since

we’ve grown old together, he’s still my fair prince

In his wheelchair he sits with a tear in his eye

his gaze ever skyward, the fly-past goes by

The Lancaster Bomber with fighters is flanked

unmistakable noise, with the best they are ranked

We sit and remember the days of our past

knowing this tribute to lost souls will last.

Return the favour sure gives one some excellent works to read Often we miss these when we visit someones page .I do not for one minute believe this is from reality (only as i can not see the age in you)having said that you conveyed the feelings so well that i may have to take it back.I was stationed at an RAF base while in the army (Tangmere one of the war time bases) i saw both Spitfires, Hurricanes, and the wonderful Lancaster's fly. The beauty of these craft was something to see ( and the noise from the Lancaster's wow).
Another excellently rhyming poem that brings pleasure to this reader Thank you

A fine tribute to those few who kept this nation of ours free from the impending shadow of Nazi Germany that had spilled over Europe, but for those heroic boys
our fate was sealed, wonderful write Sue.

A poignant tale both from the past as it must have been repeated hundreds of times over for women who watched their menfolk fly off to war, and even into the modern day as service men every from all nations are posted to do their duty. I like the mention of the Merlin engines in this poem as they had a very distinctive sound that captures the era. The hours must have stood still for the women who waited for the men to return back home, never really knowing if they would. I think the third couplet gives a view of how war really is, decent men on both sides who are trying to do their best to protect their countries at the command of someone else. War is a horrendous thing to remember for all, but the feelings of love you have created in this poem are beautiful and are part and parcel of the past and present.

    good job

    wow
    what a wondeful read
    my dad was in wwII
    and
jis portrait, in uniform, is in the next room and i sometimes see him the hero
    so handsome and strong
    actually, all the time
he taught me to "stand tall"as he would lecture me to be assertive, etc
    so
    my mom is here
    and
    i kid her about dad
like you do with your bill, for sure
    and
i sit there with her and "dad"
it's just something very important to me
i wouldn't trade it for the world
    what a great read
ps whenever i meet a vet, in the neighborhood, etc
i always get a story from 'em about the big one
    i listen, in awe
    adn
    shake their hand
hey, they were there for me
    i'm here for them now

A sad reminder to what is happening in the world today, and all the lives that are so sadly lost, yet will always be remembered.

Always enjoy how you tell a story through rhyme

    A pleasure to read Sue
