The Moonlit Path

Treading through neglected paths of midnight
o’re winding tracks of shadowed wispy haze,
enveloped atoms cling the misty air
reclaiming spirits of lost bygone days.

The roof lay open to the darkened skies
as silver moonlight limned in steely pale,
looming towers of alabaster standing
sentinel down long abandoned trails.

Penumbra space attired in fingered web
silver gates wrought from silken walls
thrust aside, swift as parting curtains
opening the way to marble halls

Moonbeams shattered in the cold embrace
of raw-boned trees opaque in littered light,
as white mist swirled and swelled on frosted loam
and nighttime senses surged to dizzy height.

Unseen footfalls echoed in the hedgerow
at first,  in front and then somewhere behind,
imagination ruled my heightened wits
uneasiness rose stealthy up my spine.

Each step became more infinitely strange
as terror urged my body to make haste,
along that lonely path through leafless trees
to leave behind the phantoms I’d embraced.

The descriptiveness of your poem really enhanced
the feeling of fear and anxiety. I love the way
you use insinuations and emotion to provoke that
in the reader without naming the fear. great job. I love the background too! perfect.
